Chapter 13

Brooklyn

Once again, I found myself in the offices of the most prolific men's magazine in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a wicked structure with wide windows and plenty of space to move around. Truthfully, I was a bit jealous of the amount of space they had—it would have been perfect for a library had it been built just for that. The library I worked in was excellent, but it also had limited resources.

That was just the nature of this world—magazines were more invested in than libraries. Though it made me angry, I tried to empathize with the amount of hard work they had dedicated to creating such a popular business. They truly commanded the center stage of the printed news, and they even made changes when their readers demanded them.

I was truly impressed.

I admired the magazine covers that were framed upon the walls leading to their private office. Along the way, I noticed the number of busy workers buzzing around the place. Some of them typed at fancy new-age computers while others busied about with papers or cell phones or other workers.

It was a thrilling place to be. I could feel the energy surrounding me like that of a never-ending hurricane. I almost became absorbed by it. It was such a different vibe than bustling around a library.

My job was typically hushed and soft except for the occasional book slapping the carpet. No one ever raised their voice above the sound of a whisper and those who did get the glares from me as well as other librarians. And no one defied my glare. I could say all that I needed to say in one simple, sharp look.

It was all part of my charm.

“Princess, are you alright?”

I perked up, realizing I had been standing just outside their office while Cooper was holding the door for me. He gestured inside.

“We'll be chatting in here for a moment.”

I nodded and followed him in, listening to the door whisper shut behind me. It cut off the monotonous drone of noise, effectively plunging the room into silence.

I blinked at my surroundings. “Wow, it's so quiet in here.”

“We made sure to install the latest technology in blocking noise,” Cooper explained.

“It helps us concentrate when we need to meet our deadlines,” Jack added.

“I can imagine that comes in handy for many things.”

Cooper raised an eyebrow in my direction. “It sure does.”

“Do you need anything to drink? Tea? Coffee? We have whiskey as well,” Jack offered.

I laughed. “Whiskey this early in the morning?”

“Why not? A little hair of the dog never bit anyone,” he joked.

“Coffee would be lovely. Thank you.”

I took a seat in one of the plush chairs in front of the grand desk. It was incredible, their office, and I wasn't sure if they shared it or if they were just saying it was jointly theirs. I noticed the plants in the corner near the window, the bathroom to the far right, and the closet that likely housed spare suits or an assortment of other items.
