The three years following David’s death were intense. Losing David was devastating, and I had to work especially hard to pursue spiritual healing and healthy self-development. I was focused on making sure Jonny experienced a happy and full childhood while serving within our community and growing the company’s footprint in Utah.

Although I believe I hid it well from Jonny, my coworkers, and those around me, I continued to struggle with grief and disappointment, maybe even a sense of failure. David’s death was never part of any plan we’d made. I was restless and wondered what the next chapter in my life would involve.

A friend of mine helped me stop striving to find meaning in why David died. This friend helped me move on and pursue a destiny of my own. With his help, I accepted that David’s death might be something I would never fully understand.

To help me grasp the value of this truth, he told me a story about General Douglas MacArthur and his brilliant plan to re-take the islands of the Philippines. His plan entailed “leapfrogging.” He said, “We won’t fight where the Japanese are strong. We’ll leap over the top of them. We won’t take the populated islands.”

As I listened to this story, I realized there are some islands I simply cannot take. Up until that point I assumed that I had to “take every island,” conquer all my obstacles, understand everything in order to move forward. But that day I realized there are times when we have to let go, and this was one of those times. I had to let go of the things I couldn’t understand and move on to my own calling and destiny.

From that day on, anytime those negative thoughts hit me, I would declare to myself, “I’m off to the Philippines!”
