ROMANCE LANGUAGE ISLANDS IN SARDINIA

ALGHERESE

The Algherese (alguerés) language, a variant of the Old Catalan language, is spoken in the city of Alghero (L’Alguer in Algherese; 45,000 inhabitants) on the northwest coast of Sardinia.

During the fourteenth century, the Crown of Aragon countries covered a large part of the western Mediterranean. After an unsuccessful revolt at the end of the century, the former population of the city of Alghero was displaced, and a large number of Catalans were brought in their place. Despite strong Italianization, today one fifth of the population of the city and its immediate surroundings consider Algherese to be their mother tongue. Since the end of the twentieth century, Algherese has been co-official and protected by the Italian state; its use in literature and music is rather developed, and many books are being translated, including The Little Prince:

Algherese:

Ah! Petit príncip, j he comprès, a poc a poc, la tua petita vida malenconiosa. Per tant temps, tu no has tengut altra distracció, que la dolçor de les colgades del sol. Ha sabut aqueix particular nou, lo quart dia, al maití, quan m’havies dit: M’agraden tant les colgades del sol.

Catalan:

Ah!, petit príncep, d’aquesta manera, i a poc a poc, vaig anar entenent la teva petita vida malenconiosa. Durant molt de temps, l’única distracció que havies tingut havia estat la dolçor de les postes de sol. Vaig saber aquest altre detall el matí del quart dia, quan em vas dir: M’agraden molt les postes de sol.

Algherese is not considered a corrupt variant of the Catalan language, but a sister language, which developed under different circumstances from Old Catalan in Catalonia and Valencia.
