I.e., on alert.

Sun Tzu refers here to the legendary Chinese warriors Chuan Chu (c. 6th century BC) and Ts’ao Kuei (c. 7th century BC). He is saying that if you leave your warriors with no way out they will fight with ferocity.

Sun Tzu refers here to a species of rapidly moving snake.

Here and in the preceding verse, Sun Tzu is counseling to fasten your army in one place, compel your forces to depend on each other for life, and they will fight fiercely and in concert.

The reference to burning boats and breaking cooking pots is akin to the Western expression to “burn the fleet”—in other words, to eliminate any way out and thus to guarantee victory or demise. This also makes a show of determination to troops and foes.
