The book fell from Mrs. Brown's hands. "They are coming for us, aren't they," she whispered.

"Yes, but they shan't find us. We leave Heptonstall in half an hour."

"Half an hour!" echoed Mrs. Brown. "I cannot possibly pack in half an hour."

"It is all the time we have," Diana called over her shoulder as she hurried from the room. She rushed into the dining room to grab the two things of value in the house; a set of silver candlesticks and a silver epergne. She set them on the hall table, then ran upstairs to her room and gave the bellpull a jerk. Without waiting for Williams, she pulled open the wardrobe and began to take out her small supply of gowns and toss them on the bed.

Five minutes later, Williams came to the room. "Oh, my," she whispered.

"We leave in half an hour," said Diana briskly. "Tell Addison. If you wish to come with us you must both be packed and ready."

A wide-eyed Williams pulled out Diana's valise from the wardrobe.

Diana took it from her. "Time is too short. I'll pack for myself. Go see to your own needs."

Williams gave her a grateful look and dashed from the room.

Diana stuffed what gowns would fit in the valise, then ran down the corridor to see how her mother and sister fared. She could hear her mother's agitated voice floating out from Mathilde's room.

Once inside, she saw Mrs. Brown, standing next to the bed furiously folding a gown. Before her rose a fluffy mountain of clothes, and Mathilde sat next to it, picking about its contents. "I don't see why I cannot take the jonquil afternoon gown," she said.

"I shan't discuss it further," snapped Mrs. Brown. "Now, hand me the blue sarsenet."
