Chapter Eight

“Well, I’ll be damned, it really happened,” Abigail sighed in disgust. “You swooned because of a man.”

“I did not swoon,” I growled, just barely conscious. "Or get the vapors. Don't you dare say I got the vapors. I passed out because I was in a car accident. I probably had a concussion that you forgot to heal."

“A wreck in which your insane, mentally unbalanced, hellbent on ruling the world cousin tried to kill you," she grumbled. "And I'm ignoring the comment about me forgetting to heal you. That never happens, and you know it."

"Yeah, okay," I begrudgingly agreed, my fingers brushing the opal pendant given to me by Grandpa Johnny on my tenth birthday. "Better get up and see what the game plan is. No way, no how can I let Bella the Bitch hurt anybody I love on my watch."

Eyes slowly opening, my head pounding and my tummy feeling kind of queasy, my right foot had just touched the ground when Clementine's 'interrogator' tone reached my ears. Slamming my peepers shut and hauling my foot back onto Zelda's fabulously odd-shaped couch, I pushed some of Abigail's enchantment into my enhanced Shifter hearing. It was time to unashamedly eavesdrop on my Mule and my best friend.

“So, retired detective, huh? Why did you come back here? Why not stay in D.C.?”

"I grew up around here. Mac and I are old buddies. Besides, Assjacket is home.” There was a tiny pause before my Mule quickly added, “At least it was.”

"Hang on a sec," Clem clipped, before hollering, "Hey Zelda, I forgot to ask, where are Mac and the kids? I just realized I haven't seen them."

"It's father-twin bonding weekend," the Almighty Shifter Wanker's answer came from somewhere farther back in the absolutely adorable log house. "They're camping. Can you imagine?"

“Yeah,” Clementine chuckled. “I can.”

"Oh, yeah," Zelda barked with laughter. "I guess you're used to roughin’ it in some seriously dangerous places.”

The sound of knuckles lightly rapping wood joined with the Canary's snickered, "Yes, ma'am," before she cleared her throat and probed, "What did you mean when you said that Asscrack…”

“Assjacket,” my Mule corrected with a chuckle.

"…yeah, whatever," Clem barely acknowledged. "Used to be your home?"

There was another pause, one that had me holding my breath and scooting farther up the couch. I could feel Levi thinking. Was pissed that I sucked at reading his thoughts the way he could read mine. What was taking so long? What could possibly be the holdup? What was he gonna say? Could he please hurry?

Eyes flying open and foot hovering over the floor, I froze in place as his charming chuckle filled the room. "Look, Clementine, I know you're worried about your friend…"

"Sister," Clem spat. "I've known Eds since the day I was born. And let's get one thing straight, you hurt her - I hurt you. Capisce?"

(A little aggressive, but her heart was in the right place.)

"Sister," Levi repeated with conviction. "Sorry 'bout that. Rest assured, I meant no disrespect. And as far as hurting Edna goes, I'll die before that ever happens.
