* * * *

Autumn couldn’t sleep. She really needed to sleep. The day that lay ahead was going to be a long one and she needed her mind to be firing on all cylinders. The knowledge of that didn’t help. She managed only a couple of hours at best in Zach’s bed before she was wide awake again. Giving up, she left Zach’s room intent on heading to the kitchen to search for coffee. If she started with the caffeine now, she could ride on the rush and make it through the day.

That plan skated straight out of her mind when she reached the end of the hallway and found Casey lounging in one of the recliners, the television at low volume and the remote in his hand as he surfed the channels. His gaze snapped to hers and the intensity in his aquamarine eyes had her taking a half-step back.

“Sorry. I didn’t know anyone else was up.”

“Couldn’t sleep. I take it you couldn’t either?”

“I did for a couple of hours and then…” She shrugged. “Here I am.” She glanced at the empty loveseat. “Where is Zach?”

Casey tipped his chin toward the hallway she was still standing in. “My bed.”

Autumn took a second to digest that bit of information. Zach had said he would sleep on the couch. It hadn’t occurred to her then, but he was too tall to get any really rest on the loveseat, but where had Casey attempted to sleep? In the recliner?

“I tried for a while in there, too, but the man snores like a freight train. And no,” he went on quickly before his admission that he’d tried to sleep in the same bed as Zach fully sunk into Autumn’s head. “We’re not gay or bisexual. We’re used to sleeping in the same bed with a woman. When there isn’t one between us…” He lifted a shoulder. “I guess you could say it’s not so odd anymore.”

“The whole sharing a woman thing is odd to me so, I guess the two of you being in bed together when you’re not and you aren’t gay is par for the course.”

One brow winged up over the rim of his glasses. “Are you saying you’ve never fantasized about being with two men at the same time?”

Autumn hesitated. This man thought she was a liar. She still couldn’t explain why that galled and bothered her so bad, but there it was. Telling him another lie certainly wasn’t going to make matters any better. “I didn’t say that. I was going to make some coffee,” she rushed on when the corners of his lips twitched. “Do you want some? Do you even have coffee?”

“We have coffee. It’s in the cabinet above the coffeemaker and, yes, I would like some, too, please.”

Autumn made a quick escape. She realized as she reached to pull open the cabinet door where he’d told her she would find the coffee that her hand was shaking. What was with her? Casey hadn’t made her nervous before.
