I couldn’t speak. My mind and body didn’t work, either. It took a long time for me to be able to read the rest of the telegram and then for me to tell Ruby that Horse had died of heart failure, quickly and without warning. The telegram didn’t say it was the drink that had killed him, but I knew it had. Drink had taken another one of us, and this time it was a dear brother, who I wish I’d got to know better and now never would.

Grief-stricken, I arranged to return to Melbourne immediately.

Before I left, Ruby stopped me and told me to slow down.

‘I’m worried about ya, Archie. I reckon it was Horse in our room last night, and he’s worried about you. I reckon he visited me. To tell me to look after you.’

I told Ruby I’d be right. I would see Horse off, see the family, and I’d come straight back.
