CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

It had started raining, lightly at first, but it was coming down harder now. Not a storm by any means, just a good soaking rain. Enough to wash away the blood on and around the two headless bodies, Pam thought. She hoped Owen had gotten good pictures of them before the rain started. The bodies would still have plenty of visual impact without blood, but with? No comparison.

The girl – Jenn – sat cross-legged on the grass, her face buried in her hands as she sobbed. Pam and Laura knelt next to her, Lara holding one of Jenn’s hands, Pam with a hand on her shoulder. Pam saw Owen was recording Lara and her comforting the hysterical girl – or at least trying to – and while part of her wanted to tell him to give Jenn her privacy, the part of her that was a producer – and this was by far the larger and stronger of the two – was gratified. Ordinarily, she didn’t like being in the video. It detracted from the illusion that Joel was a lone adventurer exploring the shadowy corners of a mysterious world. But in this case, she didn’t mind. The scene was simply too good to pass up: the grief-stricken survivor of an attack by creatures that supposedly went extinct millions of years ago. She wondered if they could get Jenn to calm down enough to say a few words on camera, maybe even describe the attack. She glanced down and saw a phone lying on the ground next to the girl. Had she been taking pictures when the first attack occurred or – please, God – even video?

If so, and she could get hold of it …

You’re a real piece of shit, Pam, you know that? This poor girl just saw three of her friends die!

Yes, and that was an honest-to-Christ tragedy. But she still had a show to produce, one that was going to make fucking history.

Andrew crouched next to the bodies, examining the neck stumps, and Owen had walked over to record them. Joel hung back, watching Andrew and Owen, but making no move to join them. Pam wasn’t sure what was going on with him. She didn’t think she was doing Jenn any good, wasn’t sure the girl was even aware of their presence. So she removed her hand from Jenn’s shoulder and stood. She exchanged a look with Lara, and the woman nodded to let her know it was all right if she left.

The rain had intensified, and the slope down to the canal was slippery. Pam went slow so she wouldn’t lose her footing and fall on her ass as she made her way to the water’s edge. She intended to join Owen and give the cameraman some direction. She doubted Andrew would take any direction from her, but if she could get him talking science, she thought he would –

The water exploded ten feet from where Owen, Andrew, and the bodies were, and the pliosaur with the deformed by all-too-functional jaw sailed through the air and landed on the bank.
