Practical Tips to Meet the 21st Century Skill of Collaboration with the Use of Technology

Students need many opportunities to practice and master the skill of collaboration by interacting and working with others. The P21 Framework described the 21st century learner as being able to work with others in diverse settings, capable of being flexible and open-minded, as well as contributing fairly to collaborative efforts. Collaboration is also an important component of career and college readiness, and the Common Core standards provide this anchor standard: "Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively" (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.1).

From early childhood through high school, students can benefit from opportunities to work with partners or in small or whole groups. If classrooms consist of open dialogue and discussion, students will learn how to work with others both inside and outside the classroom setting. Teachers can model collaborative skills by working with families, administrators, and coworkers. Schools can encourage collaboration by creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all and supporting teachers who are flexible, open-minded, and collaborative. How can technology provide even greater ways for collaboration to occur? This next section will provide technology strategies from augmentation to redefinition.
