Now, in evaluating your pilot, remember that your first attempt at anything is bound to be messy—that’s exactly why we pilot rather than build out a full course from scratch. It stands to reason, then, that the results of your pilot on these three dimensions are likely to be mixed: not terrible, but not always amazing, either. And that’s perfectly fine, because you don’t want to evaluate the pilot based on how it went, but rather on how it would go the next time, informed by what you’ve learned.

In other words, knowing what you now do, how would it go if you did it again? Do you feel confident that the next time you deliver this training it will be a smashing success on all fronts? Do you have ideas about how to make it great that still need to be validated? Or was the experience such that the biggest takeaway was to never ever try that again? That is unlikely, but much better for you to learn that sooner rather than later!

The relatively rare worst-case scenario is that you will have learned that this is not the path for you to take, so your next step should be to pivot to a new idea. Go back to the drawing board, find a new topic and direction, and start over. And while you’re at it, celebrate that it took you only a few months to learn this, rather than the years that it takes so many entrepreneurs!

Sometimes, you’ll find that you have an idea of how to make it great, but you need to validate it to be sure. In that case, your next step is to deliver a second pilot course. Change everything that you think needs to be changed, validate your assumptions, and go from there.

And often, you will have learned enough from the pilot that you are now confident in your abilities to deliver an excellent course to a larger number of students. This is the ultimate winning scenario, because it lays a real foundation for you to create leverage, freedom, and impact by teaching your gift.
