How does the heart heal?

Remember that the healing of the heart is not a problem to be fixed. In fact the truth is that the universe has our highest interests at heart. The universe is generous, like a parent (hence God is often described as the Divine Father or Divine Mother). There is so much love wanting to be given to us. Sometimes we don’t believe that because we cannot feel it. But the truth is that we don’t feel it because we are not letting it in, not because it isn’t there. So many great spiritual avatars have told us over and over again that the Truth is good news and the ultimate reality is love.

So what is in the way?

We are! All of the defences that we have built in response to fears (that were actually not true) create walls that stop the love flowing in. So when it comes to healing the heart, we are actually just learning to receive love. We are remembering how it is to receive, just as a newborn baby receives its parents’ love without any guilt.

Receiving love means we become tremendously vulnerable. It is a process of letting down our guard, dropping our defences, and being utterly soft and receptive. This is because we have learned from a distorted world that it is not safe. We have come to believe we will be rejected or abandoned or mocked if we become that vulnerable, because we learned from people who had their defences up and were not comfortable in the presence of love.

To heal the heart we have to relearn to

be as vulnerable and open as a baby.

It is essential for us to move out of unloving environments and relationships, which reinforce that it is unsafe to open the heart. In spirituality there is a wonderful word, ‘sangha’, which means a spiritual community. This is your tribe of friends who are also choosing to awaken and heal. Being surrounded by these people will start to make it safe to open your heart once more.
