Chapter Eleven

What goes up must come down

Never one to back down from a challenge—in fact I thrived on them—I took the job and became known as ‘Weenie Woman’. Yes, I know. Not exactly a title to brag about, but I did receive a red cape in the mail from Calissa, with the title on it. Who doesn’t love to feel like a hero? I was responsible for making the best darned hot dog around, after all.

My relationship with Gabe grew ever even more complicated. He was now my boss. Even though we both knew it was wrong—and against company policy—we couldn’t give each other up. Unfortunately, we were each other’s dirty little secret. It was only a matter of time before the strain of keeping our volatile feelings hidden caught up with us.

Fortunately, I was so busy learning about setting up stuffing machines and managing the hackling woman working side-by-side in the operation—men were much easier to work with than a group of women, as far as I was concerned, and I am a woman—that Gabe and I really only had a few stolen moments in a day together besides normal business.

No matter how hard you tried try to hide something, people find things to talk about. Like the fact that Gabe and I had worked so closely together when I was an auditor. They held that relationship against me, especially when a certain friend of theirs did not get this particular job, and I did. I found out very quickly how people could turn against you.

It was a month into the new position when I had a piece of equipment go down. That was another challenge for me. I was a driver, …a problem-solver, but that didn’t mean I had the answers to everything. I didn’t get this job because I did. I got this job because they knew I’d figure it out. Some people wanted to be sure, and pointed out that I didn’t have all the answers. Some just didn’t like the fact that I was a woman on a production floor in a position of authority. Okay. , A a lot of people didn’t like that.

This was one of those times. I was called out of the morning meeting by my supervisor to let me know that, after 30 minutes, the machine was still down. I came back out to the production floor and found Stumpy Warren, a mechanic missing one finger, bent over in the machine. He was about as friendly as a hornet’s nest full of bees and as old old-school as my great-grandfather had been.

I waited a few minutes before interrupting him. “Hey, Stumpy. What’s the word? What seems to be the problem? Do you have an estimate of how long we’re are looking at being down?”

Stumpy stopped what he was doing, placed the wrench—at least I think it was a wrench—on his toolbox, and turned to look at me.

“I don’t know what’s wrong, don’t know how long it’s going to be, and I sure as hell am not going to work with no woman standing over my shoulder.
