I heard Michael speaking to reporters outside my door, “Jonathan never worried about sharks,” he said, “because we’ve never seen a shark at the beach.” Reporters gave Michael’s words a bold spin in the evening news. Headlines read, “My Brother Is Not Afraid of Sharks.” Well, that wasn’t exactly true.

I never expected the whirlwind of attention that enveloped me. News clips of my interview appeared on every television station throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Friends from Chicago called to say they’d read the story in the Chicago newspaper. Fox News sent a crew to my hospital room to set up a live appearance with Ross McGowan, the host of Mornings On 2. Dateline NBC filmed a family interview in my hospital room. They wanted to follow up with a continuation of the story at Stinson beach in six months. With all this interest, I’d gained a sort of local celebrity status. My fifteen minutes.

Mail arrived from around the world. I received letters decorated with hearts and flowers from girls in Germany who had seen my interviews and wanted to be pen pals. Relatives and friends across the country called from Iowa, Chicago, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. The cast from Phantom of the Opera sent an autographed poster and an invitation for my family and me to attend the show. The German television network ZDF offered to fly our family to Germany in December, all expenses paid, to appear on People of the Year. We agreed to fly to Cologne for the live appearance. But when someone on the staff of The Oprah winfrey Show called, I declined to be interviewed. I was already overwhelmed with so much going on in my life.
