The next morning, knowing holidays were sometimes difficult for people alone, Ren had made it a point to call Mallory for every special holiday since Piper died. When Mallory answered, Ren said, “I called to wish you a Happy New Year.”

“Happy New Year to you, too.”

Ren could tell from Mallory’s voice that she was smiling her beautiful smile. “Did you go out last night?”

“No, did you?

“Yes, I took Lindy with me when the guys, P ’n P, and I went out for our traditional New Year’s Eve celebration.”

“Oh, nice. How did that go? Did the guys behave?”

“For the most part. You know Joey. He can never resist an opportunity to embarrass me, although for the most part he was on his best behavior. Besides, I think he’s met his match in Lindy. She can give back as good as she gets.” Ren told Mallory about their initial exchange regarding the toaster oven comment.

Mallory laughed. “I think you’re right. Sounds like she’s a good match for him. She certainly bested him in that exchange.”

“We really did have a lot of fun. I can’t remember having so much fun with anyone since, well you know, since Brooke. Truth is…” Ren paused.

“Go on. You know you can tell me anything.”

“I know. It’s just that the thought that ran through my head kind of surprised me and made me feel almost disloyal to Brooke.”

“So tell me. Let’s talk about it.”

“I was going to say that truth is, I think Lindy is more fun than Brooke. Although Brooke had a good sense of humor, and could always make me laugh, you know how serious she was most of the time. Lindy is always full of the devil. She lightens me somehow. I know it’s said that another person can’t make you happy. It’s just that when I’m with her, it’s like I want to be happy, so I am.”

“Ren,” Mallory paused wanting to be careful how she worded her concern. “It sounds like you might be falling in love with her. If Lindy’s straight, you have to be careful, sweetie.”

“I can’t argue with the fact that she’d be easy to love. I admit that I’m really enjoying her companionship. We work well together, are companionable housemates, and she’s been a good friend to me. But, I’m realistic. I know it’s not a possibility that we could ever become a couple, so don’t worry. I know it won’t happen.”

“Where is she now?”

“Ha! When we got home, Lindy had a bit too much to drink, so she’s still sleeping. I don’t think she’ll be her usual chipper self this morning.”

“Oh, poor thing. Don’t tease her. She’ll not be in the mood for it.”

“It will be hard to resist…but I promise I won’t. How are you doing?”

“Okay. I’m thinking of applying for another job. Actually, it’s closer to you. Administrative position, Director of Nursing, outside of New York, near Harriman.”

“That’d be great. Maybe we could see each other more often. Why are you leaving where you are? I thought you liked your job.
