Ember drove home to clean herself up. Looking in the bathroom mirror, she couldn’t help but see how obvious it was that she’d been running around outside. She turned on the shower so the water would be plenty hot when she got in.

Ember’s raven hair, which had been pulled into a tight ponytail when she first arrived at the grove, now stood out at odd angles. At least half of the ponytail was loose from the elastic grip.

Ember had been smart enough to wear a jacket, meaning the branches she’d sped past hadn’t sliced up her arms. On her face, though, she counted at least eight small scratches; fortunately, none of them looked like they’d last long.

She pulled the rest of her hair from the ponytail and ran a brush through to detangle it before undressing. Ember practically leaped into the shower, the water burning for only a second until her skin became acclimated to the heat.

Steam billowed from the small shower and quickly escaped through the bathroom door. Ember wondered if she would pick up the habit of closing the bathroom door once she had a husband in the house.

Ember scrubbed her skin clean and gave her hair a well-deserved wash. When she emerged from the shower, her skin pink from the heat, Ember felt like a new woman.

Wrapping her hair in one towel and herself in another, Ember left the bathroom and dropped onto the couch. She must have been tired because she practically jumped when Kali started talking.

“So?” the cat asked. “Find anything interesting?”

Ember leaned her head back and closed her eyes. “Nope, nothing. The wisteria at the Ryans house is way too young to produce seed pods like we saw.”

“What does that mean, then?”

“It means,” Ember responded without opening her eyes, “that Teresa could have gotten the seeds from any of the million other wisteria plants around town.”

Kali leaped onto the couch next to Ember and snuggled into the warm, damp towel. “Or, it could mean Teresa isn’t the killer.”

“Very true.” Ember opened her eyes and lifted her head. “At the very least, it means we have no idea if Teresa is guilty. Anyone could have gotten wisteria around town.”

“What are you going to do now?” Kali asked.

“I don’t know yet.” Ember sighed. “For now, though, I think I wanna grab a bite to eat.”
