Playboy: Even though youâve made black holes a central part of your lifeâs work, you concede that one has yet to be discovered. In fact, you mention in your book that you have a bet with a colleague that one will not be discovered. Is that true?
Hawking: Yes. I had a wager with Kip Thorne at Cal Tech that Cygnus X-l was not a black hole. It was an insurance policy, really. I had done a lot of work on black holes, and it all would have been wasted if it had turned out that they didnât exist. But then, at least I would have had the satisfaction of winning my bet. [ Smiles ]
