Of course, all of this is riddled with political consequences. At the beginning of his Philosophy of Right, Hegel lays out what’s missing from the ideas of liberal and libertarian political philosophies, like those of John Locke and many modern political thinkers.144 They have a tendency to see society as made up of wholly independent political agents, co-operating only for the sake of common interests. This view is typically referred to as political or social “atomism” because individuals are conceived of as independent “atoms” with no deep connections to each other. Often liberals and libertarians treat political life as if its goals were no more than to secure the freedom of citizens from force and fraud. Such freedom is often summed up by the phrase “negative liberties,” examples of which include Americans’ freedom of speech or religious expression. Yet recognition requires more than just the negative liberties of a society in which everyone is simply forbidden to interfere with each other.
