Chapter Six

When Sullivan had arranged for the meeting with the soul healer, he'd genuinely meant it as a method to smooth their courtship into something Emery was more comfortable with. Clearly, it hadn't turned out that way, and Sullivan knew this from the moment he opened his eyes.

Tentatively moving around, he took in the unfortunate and very distinctive feeling of wetness over his crotch. His body must have responded to what he'd been doing in the so-called spiritual world. But that wouldn't have been that much of a problem, even if they had been in the presence of a soul healer all along. The issue was that he'd completely miscalculated the effects of them using this ritual to begin with.

Sullivan groaned. "Shit. I claimed him, didn't I?"

He wasn't addressing anyone in particular, but he did receive a reply. "Of course you did," Dusk the soul shaman said. He was standing a few feet away from Sullivan and did not look at him as he spoke. He had a white dagger that looked suspiciously like it was made out of some sort of bone and he was busying himself with sharpening it. "What did you think would happen if you bit him in that realm?"

Now that Dusk put it that way, Sullivan did feel stupid about his question. It wasn't that he hadn't known what he was doing when he'd been in the spiritual plane. He just hadn't been able to help himself, and not because of whatever curse had been on him. It was a poor excuse, but Emery was simply irresistible, and all witchcraft aside, Sullivan's wolf had craved his mate.

In fact, he still did, so he turned toward Emery, only to find him still unconscious. "Why isn't he awake yet?" he asked Dusk.

"Turns out you did a little more than claim him," Dusk answered. He analyzed the edge of his strange dagger, before nodding in apparent satisfaction and strapping it to his waist. Symbols glinted on the bone blade, and just looking at them made Emery's wolf very restless.

"What do you mean? What did I do?"

"You awoke something that lay dormant. Unfortunately, we'll now be forced to deal with the consequences."

"Consequences?" Sullivan repeated. "What consequences?"

He dreaded the response, because he had felt something toward the end there, something powerful that had hurt and scared Emery. Their bond had tamed it, but Sullivan still didn't quite understand it.

As if in response to his query, Emery's eyes shot open. He took a deep breath, blinking several times. Sullivan bent over his mate, cupping Emery's cheek gently. "Emery? Can you hear me? How do you feel?"

"Huh? I feel fine. Why? What happened?"

"I'm not sure," Sullivan admitted. "Well... I know we bonded, but apparently... Something went wrong?"

He would have been doubtful of Dusk's words, but he did notice something different about Emery. It was Emery's eyes. They had been beautiful before, but now they shone even brighter, like sapphires of the deepest blue.

It occurred to Sullivan that Emery might not be very
