CAROLINE

I double-check my outfit in the mirror as I wait for Tyler to get here. Tonight’s our date, and I’m nervous.

Unfortunately, our texts haven’t made me more comfortable with the idea of going out with him, since they’ve remained pretty surface-level. But I’m hoping our in-person conversations flow easier.

It also doesn’t help that my mind’s been obsessed with Logan. The absence of his messages. His fiery kiss. The brief look of pain that crossed his face after I rejected him.

I can’t shake a sense of guilt for how I treated him.

Why am I such a coward?

“Stop it,” I tell myself in the mirror. Now’s not the time for self-denigration. I need to get excited, feel confident for this date.

Smoothing sweaty hands down my skinny jeans, I turn to the side, trying to imagine what Tyler will see. The navy tank I chose is tucked into the waist while the vee at the neck reveals some cleavage.

I’m trying to step out of my comfort zone and put myself out there, but I wonder if he’s going to see sexy curves or not.

As a solid size eighteen and the opposite type of woman I usually see "get the guy," I worry he’ll be disappointed. A lifetime of watching models win the man in every romcom and TV show has me doubting my allure, despite knowing those are all fictional characters.

Though it's not like anyone's ever rejected me in real life due to my weight. Bolstered by the realization, I grab my cardigan for a little bit of protection and head to the living room.

Thoughts of Logan wander into my mind again as I sit on the couch listening for a car to pull up. Our kiss has featured in a lot of my dreams, day and night, and I can’t shake the regret I have from turning him away. He made me feel sexy and wanted, but does that overcome all of our differences?

Plus, the small detail on whether his club is legit or not remains a mystery.

Staring at my phone, I turn it over in my hands, trying to figure out what to do. To be fair, I don’t know for sure that Logan’s into anything illegal. I just assumed based on my limited knowledge of motorcycle clubs. But would a military veteran really leave the service just to break the law?

Would knowing they're totally above board really change anything? A dangerous aura still surrounds him.

Groaning at how complicated my life’s become, I resolve to not think about Logan, our kiss, or anything pertaining to MCs tonight.

Focus on your date.

This could be the start of something great if I let myself believe it.

With that positive outlook buoying my nerves, my phone buzzes with a text.

Tyler: “Hey, I’m outside.”

A frisson of disappointment runs through me, though I try not to let the fact that he didn’t come to the door affect me. I’m just being old-fashioned. No need to judge the guy before I even meet him.

Grabbing my purse and keys, I steel myself for whatever the night holds.
