Chapter 15

It was late. Way too late to be chasing vampires around the city. But since I had the details of my prey on a sheet of paper in my back pocket, I had to do this.

What had that look on Jarro’s face meant when he received the phone call? I saw nothing but the world’s best poker face, except for the twitch of his jaw muscle. Subtle. Since I’d studied his face closely on a couple of occasions, I’d unwittingly memorized every curve.

The bus dropped me shy of Darken Lounge by a handful of blocks. I would use the walk to think up a plan, which could only involve staying the heck away from anything to do with vampires. Auntie Bea and I had successfully steered our lives clear of dangerous adversaries such as the vamps. As a consequence, we were still alive. But I was not a smart girl.

The next block along, I stumbled on a small pool hall called Snooker Blitz. I ducked inside, keeping my hands in my pockets to hide the blood smeared mess and bee-lined for the toilets. It was best to be clean of any traces of blood before I got too close to any vamps. The city was alive with beating hearts pulsing blood through warm, fleshy bodies, an endless distraction of delectable bites, but spilled blood would cut through the olfactory assault, dissolving other potential meals and singling me out.

Hands clean, clothes scoured for any accidental blood droplets and deemed clean, I was back out on the streets, following maps on my phone when my phone rang. It was Elka.

She didn’t give me a chance to get a word in. “Where are you?”

Just like that, fired off the bow. My mind blanked for a fraction of a second, then raced a million miles. What do I admit? “Out.”

“Your fiancée knows you’re not in your room.”

He must’ve come up after his whiskey with Bernard. “I thought you said he won’t push anything while under your dad’s roof. And he’s not my fiancée.” It was creepy, the way she referred to her life as mine.

“Doesn’t mean he won’t go looking for a goodnight smooch. So, where are you?”

“I’m after the skull. That’s the whole point of this swap.”

“That tells me nothing.”

“Look, I can’t talk. I’m getting close.”

“Laz, stop,” she yelled down the phone as my thumb hovered close to the red end call button.

“I have to go.”

“Leave it. You won’t get it.”

“You directed me to your dad’s safe, offering it up, remember? Now you don’t want me chasing it.”

“I guess you know dad doesn’t have it anymore.”

I stopped causing a drunk coming along behind me to crash into me because she didn’t have the dexterity to avoid me in her state.

“’Ey, where’d you come from?” She slurred as we both tumbled forward. I juggled my phone as the guy she was with apologized and caught her before she hit the paving.

I shoved the phone to my ear. “You knew all along.”

“What happened?”

“Answer me.”

Her reply was a frustrated sigh, like I was an imbecile.
