Similar Species Distinctions:

—Hardhack (S. tomentosa) has the same growth form, but its lower leaf surfaces are covered with dense hairs, and flowers are usually pink.

The alternate leaves are up to 3 inches long and about ½ inch wide. They are narrowly oblanceolate, and the margins are finely and sharply toothed. The upper leaf surface is green, while the lower surface is paler. Both surfaces are smooth to lightly hairy. There may be a small, leaf-like bract at the base of leaves, especially on older plants.
