When he finished chitchatting with his victim, he stuffed the corpse in the crawl space under the floorboards in his living room. A week later, he pulled the body out and washed it again. He found the rotting flesh beautiful and sexy. And when he felt lonely, he had someone to talk to. âIt was the beginning of the end of my life as I had known it,â he later wrote. âI had started down the avenue of death and possession of a new kind of flat mate.â
Eventually, Nilsen would dispose of his new flat mates in the garden, piece by piece. No one ever asked him what it was that he was burning.
In 1982, when Nilsen moved into a new building, he left the remains of twelve men behind. His new apartment was in an attic. There was no garden or crawl space. Nilsen thought that if he changed his living arrangements he could stop killing. But soon the attic flat began to fill up with suitcases. There were body parts in the bathroom and kitchen cupboards, too.
One day, the toilets in his building backed up, and the owner called in a plumber. The plumber found there was something unusual blocking the drains. The blockage appeared to be pieces of human flesh.
When the detectives asked Nilsen about the drains he calmly invited them into his flat, showed them the suitcases and plastic bags that contained the rest of the body parts, and began to talk and talk and talk (as you would expect of a writer with communication letters that are open at the top).
In sickening detail he told police how he had killed and mutilated fifteen men and attempted, but failed, to kill seven others. He even helped police identify parts of his victims.
At his trial, those âflat matesâ who were lucky enough to walk out the door testified that they had left Nilsenâs apartment with bruises and strange red marks on their throats. A few said they thought they were having a bad dream, a nightmare. In the nightmare, an enraged killer was trying to strangle them. But when they awoke, hung over and sore, Nilsen was bright and cheery. One morning, he asked a man he had just tried to strangle and drown during the night for a second date.
In 1983, the judge sentenced Nilsen to life in prison, where Nilsen continues to write and talk profusely. He told one reporter: âI caused dreams, which inevitably caused death. This is my crime. I wished I could stop, but I could not. I had no other thrill or happiness.â
