Aboard the cruiser Elliot

3:30 pm

TWO HOURS LATER, Henry Nillow appeared in person in the command module housing not only the control systems but also the cabins of the senior officers.

The admiral, who had dozed off while thinking his gloomy thoughts, woke up immediately.

"Come in, Henry."

The colonel's appearance meant that he had uncovered something important.

Ipatov trusted Nillow completely in certain matters. For example, the admiral never investigated what kind of experiments took place on the planet's RW bases. Henry was the one who communicated with the people in charge on the ground and had a better understanding of the numerous bases and especially their specifications.

"That was quick." Admiral gestured for his visitor to sit down.

Nillow sank into an armchair, switched on the holographic information screen with a mental command, sent several other orders to the cyber system, and began his report, "I used the cruiser's information processing center. There's no need to look through all the data since we're only interested in finding discrepancies between the information gained during a careful study of the RW base and the way the battle unfolded."

"You found something, I can tell." The admiral didn't know if the news were good or bad since Henry's calm and concentrated face gave nothing away.

"There are a few other hints that let me suppose that we were misinformed." Henry got straight to the point.

"Regarding what exactly?" The admiral asked.

"Regarding the destruction of the servobattalion and the assault carriers leaving the planet."

The news that Nillow had just delivered promised trouble. The admiral was well aware that the servobattalion and its assigned assault carriers were no needle in a haystack, which meant that the new type of phantom generators significantly exceeded the masking ability of the previous models.

"Wait, Henry. Let’s take it one step at a time."

Nillow nodded in readiness. "A servobattalion consists of fourteen Phalangers, twenty-one Hoplites, and seven assault carriers that are used as both a source of transport and a source of fire and technical support."

"I'm aware of that."

"Servomachines usually have the same weapons configuration, which speeds up their repairs out in the field. This decision makes sense because otherwise, the assault carriers would have to carry a large number of different spare parts and weapons systems."

"What's your point?"

"We all witnessed the unusual use of the Pilum missiles by two Phalangers. So far, we can't say for certain if the Maverick module could independently change its combat program. This is the first but not the last discrepancy between the way that assault on the RW base unfolded and the data obtained from examining the destroyed enemy units. Why didn't the other Phalangers use their Pilums in this way?"

"They couldn’t find appropriate targets?" The admiral suggested. "After the crushing blow that destroyed about five hundred servomechanisms, the LDL-55’s and their accompanying MX-300’s were ordered to avoid clustering together, or to form groups of a maximum of 3-5 machines."

"Yes, but you're wrong to think that the Phalangers no longer had appropriate targets. A Maverick uses any chance it has to inflict damage to its opponent, even if its target lies outside the specific combat task.
