On this third dive, I had chosen to hold onto a finely crafted, Damascus-style dagger with gems embedded in the handle. The ripple of merged metals looked even more bewitching as the blue light sticks and water made pools against its sheen. I ran my fingers along the edge, and even through the gloves I could tell it was still sharp. I kept my eyes closed and tried to time the even flow of my thoughts with the brush, brush of my fingers down the blade from tip to hilt.

Mage Divinos had worked with me on mimicking the sensation of breath, in and out, with wavelike thoughts. We thought that maybe one of my hold ups with being able to truly meditate was that I was forced to hold my breath. I wasn’t able to get into a good rhythm. The mage had helped me perform a ritual where I made my thoughts come in and out of their presence, like a wave coming in and out to shore.

It seemed to be helping. I seemed to be sinking deeper and deeper into the fuzzy blue glow around me, as if it were wrapping me in a deep blanket and tucking me into daydreams of lives past.

A beautiful face hovered in front of my mind’s eye, her black hair swirling, tiny glints of purple fire flashing in her eyes. It was Ruby, I knew, from paintings of her at the palace. She looked at me calmly as she floated before me in the vacuous, quiet realm of my mind, imitating the silent flow of the deep underwater cold of the glacial cave. Her hair spiderwebbed out in tangles that I wanted to run my hands through, sense the tendrils against my skin, pull her tight into me, feel everything she had ever felt, access all her memories, all her powers, all her loves and losses.

She reached out, a strong, firm finger, and poked me in the chest.

I could practically feel the impression as lights exploded in my brain and I nearly choked on the breath I was holding.

My head swam, swirling into a blur of rushing colors. I clenched the sand beside my crisscrossed legs, reaching for any hold on the real world.

Then, my swirling mind steadied, and it was as if I were looking down into the circular room at the palace where Ruby had been killed. The jade dragon statue spun on its pedestal in the middle of the crested mosaic waves, light from the noon sun’s glow spilling through its facets and radiating green ribbons against the floor.

Ruby was standing in the middle of the room. It was as if she were frozen, but it was really just her memory, my memory, slowed to an excruciating pace as she brushed her fingertips over the dragon’s gemstone sculpture.

A shadow loomed over her, creeping in from the doorway behind her. I tried to focus as the figure got closer, but all her memory could sense was his presence. Tall, dark, powerful.
