TWELVE

WINTER

I groaned when someone knocked on the bedroom door at the same time Byron muttered a curse under his breath from his position behind me. “Somebody better be fucking dying.” He snapped in the general direction of his bedroom door.

“Paige wants to see Winter make sure she’s okay,” Dylan replied.

Byron sighed in irritation. I covered his hand with mine, giving it a gentle squeeze. He relaxed a tiny bit, but I could tell he was still annoyed. “Just come the fuck on in here.” He called back, irritation seeping into his voice.

The door opened, and Paige rushed into the room. “Winter, you scared the fucking shit out of me!” Paige yelled. “You can’t just fucking run away like that without letting someone know where the fuck you went!”

I sighed and sat up, rubbing sleep from my eyes. “Paige, I’m sorry.” I apologized, a bit shocked that she seemed to care so much.

She jumped onto the bed, ignoring Byron’s grunt of protest as she wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. My throat closed up with sudden tears. Paige actually gave a damn.

“Winter, you’re my best friend, and I can’t stand the thought of losing you or something happening to you. Please, the next time something happens, just come to me first, okay?”

I nodded, wrapping my own arms around her. “I will; I promise,” I swore, gently squeezing her before releasing her.

She pulled back and jabbed her finger in Byron’s face. He clenched his jaw but kept his mouth shut. Dylan snickered from the doorway. “If you dare fucking hurt her again, I’ll rip your dick off and shove it down your fucking throat.” She snarled, getting up from the bed and storming out of the room.

Dylan barked out a laugh and followed her out of the room, shutting the door closed behind him. Byron wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me back against his side. “You okay, beautiful?” He asked softly, kissing my temple.

I shrugged. “I’m a little shocked, honestly,” I told him. He grabbed my hand and laced our fingers together. “I didn’t know Paige cared about me that much – much less thought that she considered me her best friend.”

Byron sighed and kissed my temple again. “You’ve been hurt so much and let down in your life, baby girl, that you don’t know love and family when it smacks you in the face.” He said honestly.

I sighed, knowing he was right. “I’ve never had a real family.” I reminded him. “You don’t get a chance to get close enough to someone to consider them family, much less a friend, when you’re thrown from foster home to foster home for years on end.”

Byron nodded, understanding in the depth of his eyes. “I know, baby, but Paige is a sister to you if she’s nothing else.” Tears burned in my eyes at that revelation. “From what Dylan has told me, and what I’ve heard from you, you’re the only person Paige can rely on besides Dylan.
