2. John Fairfield House

104 Andrew Street

Built in 1805 for Captain John Fairfield. Fairfield had owned ships with Jon Andrew and Samuel Archer 3rd who builds the Archer Block which will be replaced by the Franklin Building on the corner of Essex Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. Also he had lived in the Mason House. He will also own ships with Salem Commons Improvement Fund subscribers William B. Parker, Jonathan Gardener Jr., and Jonathan Mason (Fairfield will live in the Mason House on Washington Square North in 1814 before it is moved). John Mack, Daniel Hathorne (Salem Commons Improvement Fund subscriber who is lost at sea in 1805), John Derby III (built the Derby-Pickman Block on Derby Square and continues the tunnel building after his brother Elias moves to Londonberry, N.H.), and William Kimball were his captains. William Kimball will own the Kimball Block that burned down in 1899. The old bank building and Mud Puddle Toys reside there now. Plus I used to give tours of the tunnel entrances in that building quite regularly.

John Fairfield moves to Londonberry, N.H. to tend to Elias Hasket Derby Jr.’s sheep in 1814. He also was one of a few subscribers who paid twice when funds fell short for the Salem Commons Improvement Fund.

This home is one of a few that have exterior chimneys lining up on Andrew Street. I have not been able to enter this basement as of yet, but I have seen private pictures of the tunnel entrances in the fireplace arches. Looking forward to it though....
