Chapter Fourteen

Taylor had taken the day off from the coffee shop with good reason, but I went into the office to see my cousins and Shawn chattering by my uncle’s office.

“What are you three up to now?” I asked, putting my bag next to my desk.

There was a stack of files next to my computer that was new, and I realized no matter how much I’d wanted to investigate everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours, I’d have very little luck in doing so until I got my work done.

“Isabella Sorani is in town,” Larry said as if I should know who that was.

“Apparently, she’s dating Rudy’s murderer,” Steve, my other cousin, finished as if that would make it all clear.

“Are you talking about Paul Valentine?” I asked, hoping the sheriff had arrested some other good-looking man for Rudy’s murder.

“Who else?” Shawn asked.

“He didn’t do it.” I shook my head. “They let him off.”

“Or he just had enough money to talk his way out of it,” Larry said matter-of-factly. “But who cares? Thanks to him, we just might get to bump into Isabella.”

My stomach tightened, and I turned my attention to the files. “Who is she, anyway?”

“Only the hottest supermodel to hit the runways since Cindy Crawford,” Larry informed me.

“Oh.” My stomach knotted in disappointment.

Not that it mattered, but I was sure Taylor had mentioned Paul was single. I let out a disgruntled sigh as I sat in my chair and turned on my computer.

I slid the set of files over to me and saw Philip Langdon’s information right on top. I flipped open the folder to see what I had to do for them today, but the moment my computer turned on, I opened the internet instead and quickly typed in Isabella Sorani, only to be disappointed.

Not only was she beautiful, but she had an awful habit of rescuing English and French bulldogs through her rescue, Sorani Saves Happy Wrinkles.

Giving and Beautiful.

How annoying.

Well, I could see why Paul would be interested. Her long auburn hair cascaded down her back and her bright green eyes were mesmerizing, but whatever. We weren’t dating. Paul was a man who offered infinite possibilities for whomever he married.

Wait? Married. Okay. I’d officially lost my marbles. There wasn’t a reason in the world to start worrying about whom Paul was interested in, and I certainly had no business worrying about his imaginary spouse.

I pushed Paul and his supermodel out of my head and focused on the diagram of a plat in front of me.

“Is there seriously going to be a housing development with five hundred new homes here in Apple Grove?” I asked in astonishment as I stared at the sheet in the folder. “There aren’t even five hundred people to buy that many homes.”

“If you build it, they will come, cash in hand,” Larry sang. “That’s why Dad wanted to get in on it.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, closing the folder.

Uncle Harvey hadn’t mentioned anything, but considering what we’d all just
