A couple of hours later, James stood beside the passenger door of his F-350. Mark was in front of him, holding up a smartphone with a course plotted on a map. The cameraman and boom operator were nearby filming as if the planning session would be a fascinating encounter in the final film.

“As I explained when I first contacted you,” Mark began, “I’m doing some side research, so there’s a certain path we plan to follow, but everything else is up to you. We’ll stop and eat wherever you want to eat. The one exception is that we need to hit Jessie Rae’s and end at the Pig and Cow.”

James chuckled. “Not gonna complain about that. Did you already call and get their permission? I’m not barging in there with a film crew.”

“Yes, it’s all been cleared. They’re eager to get you on camera again saying how much you love Jessie Rae’s. Very few people are willing to turn down free advertising from one of the most famous men in the world.” Mark tapped a dot on his screen. “Here we are in L.A. This will be a road trip, but not an epic tour of the country. We’ll head up through Sacramento and make our way to Salem, Oregon. From there, we’ll head directly to Helena and loop down toward Vegas to hit Jessie Rae’s.”

James frowned. “And we’ll only stop at barbeque places in those cities?”

Mark shook his head. “We’ll stop wherever you want us to stop. We just want to keep that general trip plan. This is supposed to be us following James Brownstone on a barbeque road trip, not us forcing him to different places.”

“Good.” James scratched his cheek. “There are a few places I want to check out that I’ve missed on previous trips. Some of the best barbeque places are little hole-in-the-wall joints you find in smaller cities.”

“That sounds great.” Mark clapped. “That is exactly what I was hoping for—true barbeque knowledge and appreciation from an acknowledged master. I’m just going to follow you, ask a few questions, interview a few other people as well. Just so it’s clear, like it says in the contract you signed, we’ll pay for everything: gas, hotels, barbeque. I’m hoping when this is all done, you’ll think of it as nothing more than a nice little vacation.”

“I usually don’t have a camera and a boom mic on my vacations.”

Mark laughed. “Maybe you should. You’re James Brownstone. Everything you do is interesting.”

“I’m sure most people don’t agree. I might kick a little ass, but most days I just sit around cooking barbeque and relaxing, or play with my dog and kid.”

A hungry grin took over Mark’s face. “I wouldn’t be here, James, if you weren’t interesting. I know you want a simple life and you don’t care about fame, but people find you interesting. There are so many things you could have done with your fame and money, but you chose family and a restaurant over them.” His breath caught.
