Holt wrenched open the heavy door to the secured lab where Tray and Akasha were working.

“Hey, Wyman said I’d find you in here. Got a minute?” Holt didn’t bother to acknowledge the girl, even though she eyed him suspiciously.

“You were one of the two who kidnapped me.” Voice soft yet certain.

“And what makes you say that?” Denial his only form of defence. She was too smart, and he harbored a sense of guilt, even if he had been following orders.

“I remember you.” She shrugged. “You could’ve been any one of the guys chosen for the job. I’m just grateful you didn’t hurt me.” She shrugged again, then went back to what she was working on.

She was grateful. Was it a manipulation tactic, an attempt to win him over and make him feel sorry for her? She need not waste her breath. He already felt sorry for her, being cooped up in a drug lab waiting out time until they tossed her to the devil. And for what? What had their dealings with Lucifer done for them in the past? Absolutely fuck all from what he had seen.

No response appropriate, Holt shrugged and glanced down, not wanting to make eye contact with her. Like a bad omen, she was dead already, and he was as good as the devil himself, having played a part in her fate.

“What is it?” Tray interrupted his destructive thoughts.

“It’s about the blade I showed you that day in the bar. I was thinking of adding Deadly Nightshade and was wondering about our resistance.”

Tray thought for a few moments, then wandered over to his stocks and pulled out a vial of clear liquid. “One way to find out.”

Holt frowned. “Do I look like a fucking Guinea Pig?”

Tray laughed. “You chickenshit.” Uncorking the bottle, he took a sip, licked his lips and replaced the cork again. “It’ll take a few minutes to show any side effects, so make yourself comfortable.” He wandered back over to where Akasha was working on a blend.

“I had a thought, and you can tell me to mind my business if you want, but how about if we add some chamomile to this?” She suggested.

A smile teased Tray’s lips. “And why would we do that?”

She shrugged and continued to grind herbs. “You’ve thought of everything, eliminated the risk of overdose, increased addictiveness and potency. Chamomile won’t hinder the performance of your existing herbs, but it will lower aggression levels.”

Tray’s cocky smile was replaced with a frown. “I never thought of it as a problem before, but yes, I guess you’re right—tough shit.”

It was Akasha’s turn to frown.

“They’re drug fucked losers, why the fuck do I care whether or not they’re aggressive.”

A knock on the door steered their attention away from Akasha’s do-gooder request to Slade entering the room.

Gone was her frown, Akasha beamed as soon as she saw him.

Oh, did Wyman fuck that up or what.

“Hey, there,” his greeting directed at Akasha was softer than Holt was used to. “Having fun?”

The exchange seemed out of place in their current surroundings, but Holt sat back and observed.
