It’s not easy to say goodbye.

The last few days have been an oasis in a desert, an escape from reality. Between my phone calls with Valentina and Papa Gray, I’ve been able to forget the rest of the world and the horrors plaguing it. I haven’t seen Mason and Vincent that often since our explosive sex session…and then our explosive argument immediately following it. Vincent is preparing himself and his family for the inevitable war, while Mason spends his time roaming the halls of the bar, picking up any information he can from the drunken wolves who frequent there.

A few things become clear.

One, Sarai and Grim have definitely started an alliance, though according to our sources, there’s a lot of tension reverberating between the two men.

Two, Sarai and Grim are both bigoted assholes who wish to eliminate lycan and bitten wolves from the city for good.

And finally…

I’m not safe.

None of us acknowledge that blade glinting over all of our heads, just waiting to drop, but even with Brett or Mason with me twenty-four hours a day, we’re all on edge. Grim has, fortunately, stayed away since the incident fifteen days ago, but I don’t believe that means he’s given up. I haven’t seen the surly bastard, but for some reason, I feel like he’s aware of every move I make, every word I say. It’s like I can feel his eyes on me all the way across town, a penetrating, stomach-churning caress.

And by the end of my thirty days with Mason, I can’t say I’ll miss the constant fear that Grim will return for me. I don’t like being on edge, and even sleeping with a knife doesn’t provide me the comfort I so desperately need.

I stand in front of the bar with Brett on one side of me and Mason on the other. I feel physically sick to my stomach as I wait for Tai to arrive and take me to the Totemic Tribe.

“Stop fucking growling,” I hiss at Mason, jabbing my elbow into his side. “You’re giving me a stress headache.”

“I fucking hate this,” he bites out, his tone scathing. He twists his head to pierce me with a bright green gaze, one that I lose myself in momentarily before blinking myself back to the present. “I don’t trust Tai or the Totemics or Sarai…I don’t trust anyone, really, besides me.” As an afterthought, he adds, “And my cock. I trust my cock.”

Brett releases an indignant huff and reaches over my head to smack Mason’s cheek.

We haven’t told Brett the truth yet about our tenuous relationship and mating bond. It’s not because we don’t trust him—the exact opposite—but I know my big brother and how he’ll react. Since we found each other thirty days ago, Brett already proved to be immensely protective of me, to the point that he wants to rip Mason’s head off daily for even daring to flirt with me.
