And talking about theater—just once, a first-rate professional troupe came to our area. Not to Anju, mind you, but to Kihara. In one of the scenes they put on, an unsuspecting boy, playing outdoors, was snatched up into the air by a huge goshawk that had come swooping down. The actor who played the hawk was, of course, suspended by ropes from above. But the ropes were black, as was the background scenery, so it really did look as if there were a hawk soaring in the sky. It was so realistic, in fact, that the whole audience rose up as one and cried out in surprise while watching. The hawk descended to the stage, then tied the child up with a rope, grabbed both his hands, and as the rope was pulled by the stage-hands from behind the scenes, the child was carried off rapidly into the air. As this happened, the child screamed and thrashed about in terror. That's what happened. But according to the story-line of the play, years later, the boy who'd been carried off by the hawk went on to become a great Buddhist monk. It seemed perfectly reasonable to me—that a boy who had survived such an ordeal, would later go on to become a great man.
