“How do you know this is the right place?” Medusa stood next to me, looking up at the giant cave opening. The sun barely peeked into the entrance. The beams of light never touched the darkness deep in the cave. It was an eerie black hole in the middle of a red wall.

I spun in a small circle, taking in the dark red terrain roughly carved from the earth. Giant rocks and archways riddled the desert as far as the eye could see. Random plants clung to life under the beating sun.

Thanatos didn’t even bother looking around. He kept his eyes on the entrance to the cave. “She’s in there.”

I looked up at him, taking in the way the sun glinted off the dark strands of his purple hair. “What can you see?”

“Only one way to find out.” He moved toward the edge of the cave, and I fell into step beside him.

I took my time stepping over rocks and winding my way in. Medusa was to my other side, just behind me a bit. We didn’t speak, it felt too dark, like one word would shatter the darkness. The deeper we got, the cooler the air became. The smell of damp earth and something pungent stung my nose.

Thanatos waved his hand and the blinding darkness began to recede. Light streamed in through tiny cracks in the ceiling, giving us just enough to see the whole thing.

“Are those . . . trolls?” I hissed.

Medusa groaned. “Not trolls, cyclopes.”

Half a dozen giant-looking things lay sleeping around the cave. They were all lying about in various lazy positions. The stench was even stronger this close, a mixture of horse shit, garbage, and hot breath. Their deep snores echoed off the cave walls and vibrated over the ground. I froze, waiting to figure out what to do and where to go. I glanced around the cave, searching for something or some way around them. At the back of the cave, there was a large crack in the wall, big enough to fit a human but not a cyclops.

I pointed over the pile of cyclopes. “There. We have to get there.”

“All we need is to sprout wings and fly.” Medusa pursed her lips at the pile of giant cyclopes blocking the way.

The little hairs on the back of my neck rose like I was being watched from all angles. My body went on alert, and I didn’t know why. Thanatos stiffened at my side. Medusa took a step closer to me. My eyes adjusted to the dim light and then I saw it. The cave was moving. The walls seemed to creep and crawl over itself.

I shook my head. “Is that what I think it is?”

Thanatos put his arms out. “Hold very still.”

“She must be close.” If natural-born spiders were here, then Arachne would be too.

They encroached on us from all sides. Their bodies were a dark brown that blended in with the dark, sandy hues of the cave. Their bodies were meaty things, like a wolf spider with glistening black eyes and fuzzy thick legs.
