Chapter Twelve

Mason

“Are you serious?” Travis widens his eyes, and glances across the quad toward Charity and her friends. “Angel followed her from your house?”

“It had to be Angel.”

Even Jeremy looks perturbed. His usual placid expression is disturbed by a slight frown. “They tried to drive her off the road?”

“Yep.”

“That guy is in full-fledged lunatic mode,” rasps Travis. “I mean, I guess we knew that, but staking out your house is an unexpected development.”

“Tell me about it.”

“What’s he going to do? Pick us off, one by one?” Travis raises his auburn brows.

Jeremy chuffs. “The guy kidnapped a girl. He was already completely off the rails as far as I’m concerned.”

“Yeah. He’s mental,” Travis says.

“Fred thinks he knows someone who can help us.” I look around, to be sure we’re not overheard. If any of the regular students heard me, they’d think I was nuts.

“Who?” Jeremy asks, looking skeptical. “I’m not sure SEAL Team Six could handle that psycho.”

“Remember at the candle light thing for Charity, Fred said something about the Mexican Mafia?” I ask quietly.

“Yeah.” Travis nods. “What about it?”

“Wait, what?” Jeremy laughs. “The Mexican Mafia?”

“Shhh.” I scowl. “Keep your voice down.”

“You’re serious?” Jeremy’s gaze flickers.

“Yes.” I meet Travis’s gaze. “Fred apparently has friends in low places.”

Jeremy shakes his head, looking intrigued. “Well, what did Fred say?”

“He said Angel’s dad is rumored to have ties to the…” I stop talking when a group of girls go by. Once they pass, I clear my throat and continue, “He has ties to the… MM.”

Jeremy says, “Are you sure Fred wasn’t just putting you on?”

“At his step daughter’s candle light vigil?” Travis scowls. “Are you serious, dude? Of course he wasn’t kidding.”

Jeremy holds up his hands. “Relax. You have to admit, this whole thing is a little out there.”

“Yeah. All of this is out there. Ever since The Immorals arrived on campus, everything has gone insane.” I grit my teeth, and say, “But it’s the truth.”

“Okay, so what does that mean exactly?” Jeremy asks.

“Fred says he’s going to reach out to someone he trusts. Someone who has connections to those… people.” I grimace.

“And then what?” Jeremy narrows his eyes. “Are they going to threaten Angel or something?”

“I don’t know exactly what they’re going to do. But the expectation is that they’ll tell Angel to cool things down. They don’t like all the attention. They’ve already hinted at that with Juan, but Fred thinks they’ll be willing to come down harder this time. Angel is causing issues for them.”

“Do you think Angel will listen to his dad?” Travis looks as worried as I feel.

“I have no idea. If he was a normal person, maybe I’d be less skeptical. But his elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top floor.” My stomach clenches with stress.

“And if he ignores the warning?” Jeremy arches one brow.

“I don’t know what happens next.” I swallow. “I don’t think I want to know either.”

“They wouldn’t… kill him, right?” Jeremy blanches. “I mean, that’s kind of scary to think they’d go that far.
