It’s late in the afternoon when Lavinia calls with news from Filippo. Kate answers and puts it on speakerphone so we can all hear.

“Filippo’s asked to meet us. I’ve suggested your flat, since it is the quietest location available. I hope that’s okay.”

“Of course, it’s fine. What time should we expect you?”

“We’ll be there in an hour. He said he doesn’t have long, so no need to think about organising dinner.”

“It’s a plan. We’ll see you soon,” Kate confirms.

“Am I the only one who feels nervous?” I scan Kate’s face for any signs of her thoughts.

“No, Nat. It seems ridiculous to be so tense. After all, Filippo is Lavinia’s close friend. He said he’d help as long as our story checks out. It would only take him a couple of phone calls to verify everything.”

“And yet…” my voice trails off. I go quiet as I try to put my finger on what is bothering me.

Surprisingly, it’s H who comes through with the answer.

“It’s the magical ‘elp you’re missing, Nat. Iffen we were in Oxford, we Eternals would whisper in the right ear and open doors wherever you needed to go.”

Mathilde freezes in place, as taken aback as I am. The look on her face makes me laugh at the both of us. “A year ago, I didn’t know magic existed. Now I depend upon it. It’s incredible how much your life can change.”

Harry, ever the voice of reason, joins the conversation. “I’m not so sure that there isn’t some kind of magic at work here. What are the odds that I’d visit Padua with the only people in the world who’d have a chance at solving this mystery?”

“She’s right,” Kate adds. She pauses her task of carrying more chairs into our sitting room. “I’m more convinced than ever that Padua is meant to be the next connection point to the magical field.”

I ponder her words as we get everything set up for Filippo and Lavinia’s arrival. We’re very lucky to have Lavinia as our first prefect. However, it wouldn’t be fair to leave her on her own with such an enormous responsibility. Sir Christopher Wren had the help of his Philosophical Club when he discovered how to connect Oxford to the magical field. Four centuries later, it still takes three of us to keep the magical connection in place. We each have our own sphere of responsibility — and doing our part is a full-time job.

Lavinia is perfectly suited to be the new Kate, but who will oversee the books like Mathilde, or the people and ceremonies like I do?

I’m no closer to an answer when the doorbell rings, announcing our visitors’ arrival.

Lavinia enters first, trailing her floral perfume through our rental flat as she makes the rounds. Even though it’s only been a few hours since we last saw her, she still takes the time to buss light kisses on all our cheeks. Filippo follows behind her, limiting himself to a handshake.

I know I shouldn’t read anything into his
