VOLUNTEER FOR DIFFICULT ASSIGNMENTS
Be quick to volunteer for tasks, projects, or additional responsibilities. When a problem arises, volunteer to help find a solution. If you can add value to a task force, join it. If you have a chance to take on additional responsibilities, always try to accept the challenge and, in the process, expand your learning and horizons. I know of employees who volunteered to create their companyâs website and went on to head a department as the area grew in importance to the organization.
Volunteer to take over an assignment your boss isnât very excited about: attending a meeting or making a presentation in his or her place, sorting job applications, or traveling for business, for example.
When a customer makes a request that you have never heard before, donât hide behind company policy and focus on what you canât do. Focus your energy instead on what you can do to help this person.
Listen closely, explore the situation, and suggest an alternative. Take a calculated risk, if necessary, to do what perhaps has never been done before to help a customer. Not only will you likely have that customer coming back, but in the process, he or she might in turn share the positive experience with others.
Be the person others look to, take on challenges, and get things done. Jump on opportunities, offer a helping hand or a timely suggestion, make a plan, and work your plan. Seek help and recruit others as needed to get the job done. Volunteer, follow through, and finish what you commit to doing.
