Chapter 14

Rosie answered the door when I arrived, and pulled it open to let me in. “Dot tells me you’ve got yourself a new case. A missing person.”

“Right. A lawyer named John Waters. He sounds like a peach. Lied to his wife about getting laid off from his job.”

“Well, unfortunately for us, he’s not active on any social media sites,” Dot announced from her spot at the computer. “I’ve spent half the afternoon scouring the web for his digital footprint, and let me tell you, there’s not much of one.”

“Have you been in the ocean?” Rosie asked as I went over to the computer, her eyebrows rising slightly.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I muttered, and Dot grinned.

“Never mess with the water. Anyway, speaking of messing with, I don’t know what’s happened to John Waters, but it’s probably not good.”

“All right, what do you have?” I pulled a chair up and sat down, leaning forward to get a good look at the screen.

“First, you tell us about the dinner with Rowan,” Dot said.

I shrugged. “It was fine. I don’t think he did it. He hasn’t got anything remotely resembling a motive.”

“That you know of,” Rosie warned. “But how was he as a person?”

“Very nice. Kind,” I said, heat rising up the back of my neck.

“You’re blushing!” Dot said accusingly.

I feigned ignorance. “Am I?”

“You totally are. Spill. What happened?”

I recounted the entire story, from dinner last night to the kiss after paddleboarding today. When I was finished, Dot squealed with excitement. “Our little Charlie’s growing up.”

“I am not,” I shot back, certain that my face was the color of an overripe tomato.

“It’s a good thing, Charlie. You’re allowed to have some fun,” Rosie said. “Although personally, I’d recommend sticking to people who aren’t murder suspects. Still, I agree with you, it seems unlikely that he’s the culprit.”

“Well, now that I’ve told you two everything, what do you have on our missing person?” I asked, trying to turn the attention away from me.

“John Waters. Fifty-two years old. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Moved to Maui when he was seven. Did his undergrad and law school at UH,” Dot announced.

“I can see why his parents moved here,” Rosie muttered. “I spent a weekend in Minnesota in January once and let me tell you, it makes Moscow look like a tropical paradise.”

“Coming out of law school he tried to start his own firm, but shut that down after two years and took the job he had up until six months ago. Married his wife Vanessa when he was twenty, and they had a daughter a year later. Has a house Upcountry near Kula worth about two million. Frankly, this guy was just hitting all the squares in The Game of Life. All he had left to do was retire, break a hip, go to the hospital, catch pneumonia, and die.”

“Well, there’s a happy thought.”

“Might be better than what actually happened to him.”

“Which is?”

“Don’t have a clue. What I can tell you is that since yesterday morning, he hasn’t used his credit or debit cards or made any phone calls.
