Chapter 18:

My ‘Experience’

Other than Wilson Trapt, I’ve never spoken of this incident to any other human in the world. This is the first public airing of what I’m about to say. I’ve never even uttered a word of this story into the ears of those calling themselves my ex-wives. The thing I’m about to share here with you has been private for decades. This is an exclusive.

The date was seventeenth of April 1979. We left Phoenix around midnight, our destination was Las Vegas. Wilson and I had a rare two days off. With those two days we thought it would be fun to go for a full-on blow-out in Sin City. We planned to drive to Vegas straight from Phoenix in one non-stop journey. But soon after beginning our road trip, it became clear we were fast becoming tired. We mutually decided pulling over for a much-needed rest and some shut-eye would be a very sensible thing to do. Besides, we wanted to turn up in Vegas full of energy and ready to party, getting some form of sleep on the side of Route 98 would be the best way to achieve that.

Wilson pulled over just on the outskirts of Prescott National Forest. Before we went to sleep, we decided to do some drugs, not cocaine in this instance, we decided to do some weed. Some real, strong, weed. It was real dark outside with desert sand surrounding us on both sides and the highway stretching straight out in front of us. There was no traffic whatsoever, it seemed we were the only life under those stars in a hundred miles.

We had the little light inside the car switched on. It shone out like a beacon to the universe. It was nice and cosy, we were both reclined back in our seats, Wilson on the driver’s side and me in the passenger side. The weed was sparked up and we were passing it around, one after the other. The car was filled with smoke, the smell was wonderful. I could feel myself dozing. The only sounds making their way into my ears were the deep silence outside, and Wilsons breathing, as he feel into sleep. My eyelids weighed heavy, and my limbs felt numb. I felt like a spaceman in a spacesuit. I rubbed my face with the palm of my left hand, I willed on sleep. A few moments passed and a dizzy veil blossomed over my head as my eyelids drooped and eventually closed. I seemed to go to a place of unconsciousness.

I don’t know if I dreamt the events which constitute my memory of that evening or whether they actually occurred. Whatever happened it’s something I’ve never forgotten.

So, what happened? I recall feeling as though I woke up suddenly — owing to a loud bang. Almost like something hitting the side of the car. It sounded to me as though a rock had been thrown at the metal panelling of our vehicle. I ‘woke’ with a jump.
