Chapter Ten

After Logan rushed from Mattie’s shop to deal with whatever law enforcement business he’d been summoned to, I finished the last few bites of my brownie and pondered his departing remark. He hadn’t told me not to do anything regarding Roger’s murder, nor did he lecture me on the dangers of doing my own investigating. It was progress, and I looked forward to spending more time with him, even if it was to discuss Roger.

Once I’d tossed the paper plates and cups in the nearest waste receptacle and placed the tray on a stack with several others, I waved at Trina and Mattie, then headed back to the shop.

As soon as I stepped inside, I spotted Grams standing near a display in the area I’d dubbed dark and ominous because of all the paranormal products lining the shelves. My father took pride in keeping his favorite section stocked with items I sometimes thought were questionable. She was showing two women our limited collection of books on magical lore. Their oohs and awes were a good indication that my grandmother had guaranteed more sales.

I moved toward the back of the room where Jade was working. “What happened to Logan,” she asked. After opening a box she’d placed on the counter, she pulled out several stacks of plastic bags stamped with the shop’s logo and set them on a shelf underneath.

“He got called away on an emergency,” I said.

“That’s too bad.” Jade wrinkled her nose. “How did the rest of your date go?”

“Fine until Roger showed up and wanted an update on our progress.” I walked around the counter to stand next to her.

“It’s only been a few hours since he went with us to see Amos.” Jade retrieved another stack. “Did he really think we’d be able to find more clues in such a short time?”

“Personally, I think he’s lonely. I can’t imagine how awful it must have been to be trapped in the park with no one to talk to for such a long time.”

“You’re probably right,” Jade said, pulling the last of the bags out of the box. “Did he show up before or after Logan left?”

“Right before,” I said.

Jade glanced across the shop to make sure Grams was still helping her customer. “Did you get a chance to tell him about Roger’s demise theories?”

“I got as far as sharing what we’d learned from Bryce, not about the investigating we’ve been doing?”

“How about the other thing?” Jade asked.

I knew she was referring to Roger’s treasure. “I told him I was helping with unfinished business but couldn’t tell him what it was.”

“I’ll bet that went well with Mr. Hotty Detective,” Jade chuckled.

“He wasn’t too happy about it, not after he figured out that Shawna, Grams, and you all know.”

“I’m sorry.” Jade’s pout didn’t seem all that sympathetic.

“It’s fine,” I said. “Roger gave me permission to tell Logan about the other thing the next time I see him.”

Footsteps alerted me that Grams and the two women she’d been helping were heading toward us.
