We’re up and moving in seconds. In fact, we’re so much like a well-oiled machine that you’d think we’d done this a thousand times before.

It takes just moments to clean up and get dressed, wipe down the dais, and turn around for each other’s inspection, making sure all our clothes are in place.

All the while, Anna relates what Fern told her and I stew over it.

If Vlad doesn’t have the amulet, the situation is even worse. But she’s right—trying to flush out his pack won’t do shit if it’s someone else who has the stupid thing right now.

“Ready?” Phoenix greets me from the door as I stride over there. “I believe it’s a human or a werewolf, if you’re curious.”

“One or the other. They’re very similar,” I say with a straight face.

Phoenix smiles. “Unfortunately, at this time of the month, yes.”

“Werewolf,” Blade says simply, and I don’t bother questioning him. I believe him.

Anna catches up to me, so I take her hand and slide my fingers between her smaller, more delicate ones. “Ready?” I echo Phoenix’s question to her.

“Always.” Her eyes glitter with that strength that I’m irresistibly attracted to. There’s nothing—no challenge, no danger, no problem—I’ve ever thrown at her that’s made her retreat.

So many things to love about this woman, and I could spend all day counting them. But not today.

The most fragile day of my fledgling leadership is upon me. I have to focus with everything I’ve got if I want to keep the throne, my people, and even my life.

Anna and I let go of each other’s hands—the better to grip weapons—and stride out side by side, and just behind us, the other four men fan out and scrutinize the court.

I take a moment to do the same before I address the newcomer. Some aren’t meeting my eyes, while others do but look guilty about it.

It brings me no small measure of relief to find that four of my more loyal men have arranged themselves in front of the door like guards. Figgy is one of them.

Good. Sentiment is back on my side—and they feel ashamed about nearly letting a Guardsman lead a revolt against a true-blooded born thief.

“Oz,” greets the woman with an inscrutable expression. She’s around my age, limber and dressed in plain clothes. She’s presentable, but she certainly doesn’t come across as rich or vain. “I’m Juniper of the Sweetgrass pack,” she introduces herself.

A murmur ripples through the room, and I step forward and nod. “Oz. King of the thieves’ court. You seem to know me already.” That worries me. I don’t know which of Vlad’s followers know who I am.

“Know of you, yes,” Juniper clarifies. “From our past few days living in the City, we’ve heard tell of you. But I don’t believe we’ve met.”

I nod, my chest easing a little. “What brings you to my territory?” I ask, slipping a thumb in my belt near my favorite knife.

“We’ve been searching for our lost pups, Copper and Sky.” Juniper pauses. “Not pups anymore.
