Chapter 9

Sebastian

GRACE WIPES HER EYES and pinches the skin on her face, sending a flood of red to her cheeks. “Better?” she asks.

I stroke a lock of hair away from her face. “Gorgeous, even post puke.” And she is. Grace hardly ever wears make-up but with her thick dark lashes and alluring wide eyes that are more tempting than the most decadent of chocolate, it’s fair to say that lately, she has me mesmerised. Probably because of the sheer amount of time I am spending with her, but I can’t help but feel as I get to know her soft, vulnerable side, I feel protective of her. Like she needs me even though she shows me her strong, independent side often enough to remind me that she doesn’t need me.

I lead Grace out to the foyer where Luke is on the phone, and the sound of plates clattering onto the trolley echoes through the hall as Betty clears away dinner. “Where’s the old man?” I ask.

Luke puts his hand to the receiver. “In the drawing room playing with the cat.” He then tells whomever he is talking to on the phone that he’ll call them back and returns his attention to Grace and me. “Great show you two. You even had me believing it. Tell me again why you two don’t just date?”

“Because... it’s none of your damn business, that’s why. We’re leaving. I’m taking Grace home.”

Luke slips his phone into his back pocket and puts his arm on Grace’s shoulder. The simple act brings out my possessive side and I’m tempted to bat him away.

“You feeling better?” he asks Grace.

“I’m fine now. I’m not sure what that was. I’m sorry I ruined dinner,” Grace replies with a flush of embarrassment.

“You didn’t ruin dinner. It was Betty’s side of salmon. It was ruined before it hit the plate.” Luke winks, and Grace lets out a tinkle of laughter.

“Ah, there you all are. I thought I could hear you all out here whispering.” Gramps lingers in the doorway to the drawing room and ushers us inside.

“We weren’t whispering. You’re just going deaf in your old age,” Luke says, smiling to me.

“You’ll wonder if you’re deaf when I clip you around the ear, my boy!”

Gramps has been making this threat since we were young boys but has yet to follow through on it, and boy did we push his limits and press his buttons when we were younger.

“Battery and assault are criminal offenses, old man. Don’t think I won’t bust your ass just because you’re family.”

“You just love playing that cop card, don’t you, brother?”

“What can I say, I’m a hero and, as such, should be worshipped. I’m not getting nearly as much love as I deserve from this family. Grace, you’re new to town, so I’ll give you a break since you probably haven’t heard about me yet. But you appreciate a hard-working cop, don’t you?”

Grace’s teeth pinch the corner of her lips in a smile. “Oh, I’ve heard about you, all right.
