7.4.9 Adolescence/Later Childhood: 11–19 Years

The adolescent child is one who borders on puberty all the way through young adulthood. Growth is accelerated during this time with the development of secondary sex characteristics. Early adolescents are very egocentric, and most are concerned with their own thoughts (American Academy of Pediatrics 2019b). As adolescence progresses, teens may want more privacy and sexual identity can be confusing for them (American Academy of Pediatrics 2019b). Teens tend to spend less time with their families and more time with their friends. Peer pressure to fit in and conform to their friend groups is very important to teens. It is estimated that one in four teens will experience bouts of depression and anxiety as well as emotional and/or behavioral problems (Duderstadt 2019; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2019b). Routine screening for mental disorders is critical, as well as early treatment and support.

Teens may also lack the understanding of risks of activities and can be impulsive, especially when it comes to sexual exploration. Older adolescents are more able to understand the consequences of their actions and may be less impulsive than younger adolescents (American Academy of Pediatrics 2019b). Adolescents are more likely to try new things that are often prohibited without understanding long-term consequences. Teens tend to be very electronic savvy and can easily navigate across the Internet. Video gaming is common, especially in teen boys. Phone use is common, and teens may spend hours on their electronic devices. Parents should be savvy to their child’s use of the Internet to make sure the content they are viewing and interacting with is age-appropriate.
