CHAPTER TWELVE

NOAH

Everett pushed to his feet and told me that he needed a minute before disappearing down into the boat’s cabin. I watched him go, my stomach tied in knots while I waited for him to return. Thankfully, he was only gone for about five minutes before the door to the cabin opened again, and he climbed back onto the deck.

His gaze was on mine, his beautiful brown eyes soft with understanding as he lowered himself to sit across from me.

“I’m sorry,” I said, holding his gaze.

“I know. It’s okay,” he replied with sincerity. “But why didn’t you tell me?”

I chewed the side of my cheek and took a breath before responding.

“Would you have stopped everything that night if you had known?”

“Of course,” he retorted, and I shot him a pointed look that said, exactly. He saw it and caught my meaning, and exhaled a long sigh. “I also didn’t give you time or space to tell me.”

“Doesn’t change the fact that I should have told you, I get that now,” I said, keeping my voice soft as I tried to remind him that none of this was on him.

He nodded, and I took that as a sign that the apology was accepted and we could move on. I looked back over the water, noting that the sun had made its way toward the horizon.

“Come on,” I said, standing and extending my hand to him.

Everett eyed it questioningly before placing his hand in mine and following me as I led him across the deck to the railing. I stopped, gazing at the small beach a stone’s throw away, and inhaled deeply, taking it all in. I heard him do the same at my side, our hands still joined. His palm was warm and comforting in mine. As the sun continued to sink and the breeze kicked up off the lake, a slight chill crept into the air, and I shivered lightly.

Everett noticed it and dropped my hand without a word before stalking back into the cabin. He reappeared a moment later with another blanket, and I shot him a grateful smile as he approached. He draped it over my shoulders, and I snuggled into the warm fabric. I expected him to step away, but instead he took a step closer.

I could feel the warmth radiating off of him as his chest pressed into my back. For a fleeting moment, I considered pushing him away. I knew that getting close to Everett was dangerous, especially before I’d decided on whether or not to tell him about Milo. But, his warmth and the firmness of his chest against me feel so damned good. I couldn’t stop myself, and I leaned back into him.

He wrapped his arms around me, and I wanted to melt. We both looked out at the water. But oh, how way my body folded into his.

I could hear—no, feel—his heart beating, and I closed my eyes, listening intently to it. It picked up its pace, and I realized I’d leaned into him even more.
