STUDY GUIDE

Chapter 9

47. Douglass speaks of being hungry for the first time when he returned to work under Master Thomas. Have you ever felt really hungry? Imagine feeling that pain in the stomach, and that lack of energy day in and day out. Then imagine yourself in that state, having to work nonstop from sunrise to sunset for someone who emotionally and physically abuses you. Especially after knowing how to read, write and live a somewhat civil life. Write a paragraph about your condition, and your thoughts and feelings around being forced into such a difficult life.

48. Do you know anyone, who, like Captain Auld is truly mean? If so, how do you engage with him or her when in his or her presence?

49. The Captain was so insecure and inconsistent that he could not ever command respect from his slaves. When he found religion, his cruelty worsened as he found religious sanction to support it. How have you seen religion used to support narrow-mindedness or negativity? How does it affect those who are subjected to it? Provide at least one example of this either in modern day time, or in history.

50. Mr. Cookman was a good man, who always took notice of the slaves. Do you think it was easy for him to be that way among men, most of whom were not? Was it risky for him to be that way?

51. Frederick Douglass spent a year working for Mr. Covey, who was known for this talent to breaking young slaves. Douglass was happy to have been turned over to Covey, for the simple fact that he would be fed well. The author clearly lived a life of intense highs and lows. How do you think this ultimately affected his communication abilities (writing and speaking)?
