Watch your toddler interact with the play dough. If he is playing appropriately with the play dough (i.e., making a ball or pushing it down), imitate his actions. If your toddler doesn’t know what to do, show him by pushing down the play dough or rolling it with the rolling pin. If he is ready to use cookie cutters, do this step next. Give your toddler a choice of which cookie cutter he wants to use (e.g., “Do you want the dog or the cat?”). Show each cutter while asking the question. Make a snowman, make worms or snakes, make a ball, or make pretend food and serve it to your toddler’s favorite stuffed animal.
