“Actually,” Bettie began. “I would like you all to sit together on the sofa so I can look at you all at the same time.”

I glanced at Jackie who was sitting across from me in a chair and she gave me a look that was somewhere between ‘WTF?’ and ‘Yes, ma’am’. Again, she was smiling, which by itself was still surprising, so I didn’t cringe like I have so many times when it looked like something might set her off. I stood up first and walked to where Marcella was sitting and Jackie joined me a half a second later.

Bettie stood in front of us as if she was conducting a class, or leading a meeting. It was so out of character for her but I was so proud of her, too. She was showing me a different side of her that I didn’t even know was there.

It was only the beginning.

“So, I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time,” she said, cryptically. “I hope you won’t hold it against me, especially Jackie and Marcella, because it affects you two the most, at least in terms of how dishonest I’ve been.”

“Dishonest?” Jackie said with that old edge in her voice. I cringed despite myself. “What are you talking about, Bettie?”

“Hear me out, and then I’ll answer any questions for you both. For all three of you.” She took a deep breath as if she was about to duck underwater for a long time.

Bettie turned to me first. “Oliver, as you know, I’ve been relying on Jackie and Marcella to pay for the maintenance of this apartment for a while, several years. They have been incredible in that time, never once complaining about my lack of contribution to our household expenses and footing the bill to keep us afloat as if they owned the place right along with me.” She turned to the girls. “And not once did they insist on getting anything in writing from me, which any lawyer or financial advisor would have insisted on to protect their interests. In fact, they never even brought it up, although if they had I would have signed anything they wanted me to.”

I glanced over at Marcella and Jackie and noted the looks of surprise on their faces.

“So, it’s with a great deal of gratitude and a little bit of trepidation I tell you now that I’ve been dishonest with you both. For that, I’m sorry, but I have a plan to make it up to you if you’ll let me.”

“What the fuck are you talking about, Bettie?” Jackie said with some of that old venom in her voice. I glanced her way and I was surprised to see a look on her face that concerned me – anger.

“Hey, babe,” Marcella said with a much softer tone as she looked at Jackie and touched her arm. “Hear her out before you lose your shit.”

“Thanks, Marcella,” Bettie said. “But she has every right to be angry with me. I only hope you can forgive me.
