Life cycle of Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito

Soft and white when laid, the eggs of Aedes aegypti quickly become as dark and hard as a caraway seed. In this state, they remain viable for up to eight months. Eggs of similar mosquitoes can live for many years and even decades until immersion in water stimulates hatching.

Larvae of Aedes aegypti feed by browsing on organic matter adhering to surfaces in their aquatic environment. This stage of development lasts one week.
