Chapter 6

Not only had he learned the identity of Jane Doe, but Fin also suspected his initial suspicions had just been realized.

Aria Savage, daughter of an employee of the state department working at the American embassy in Turkey, was also the notorious Angel of Death he’d rescued on his mission in Syria a few short weeks earlier.

“If I truly am Aria Savage…” she said, “my father is dead.”

“Oh, honey.” Sadie touched her arm. “I’m so sorry.”

Aria shook her head. “None of this is familiar. Why can’t I remember?”

“You were in shock before the accident,” Hank said. “I bet crashing the motorcycle and hitting your head pushed you past the shock. Your brain went into self-preservation mode.”

“And shut down,” Aria said quietly. “But why was I in Montana?”

“I can answer that.” Swede nodded toward another screen he’d just popped up.

A young woman smiled for the camera as she signed a paper. The article was about a Coeur d’Alene teen who’d received a full scholarship to attend Montana State University in Bozeman.

Aria frowned. “I was on my way to see my sister.” She pushed away from Fin. “I have to get to Bozeman.”

“Let Swede locate your sister before we leave,” Fin reasoned.

“Whoever tried to kill me might be after Sarah. That had to be why I was in such a hurry to get there.”

Fin’s brow dipped. “When I picked you up off the highway and said I was taking you to the hospital, you did mention that you didn’t want me to take you there because—as you put it—they’ll find me.”

She met his gaze. “And they did.”

“After all this information, are you remembering anything before the accident?” Hank asked.

Aria shook her head and waved at the photo of her sister. The girl might as well have been a stranger. “I don’t remember anything before Fin found me on the highway. I don’t even remember riding a motorcycle.”

But Fin remembered when she’d ridden a motorcycle into battle and then away once the enemy had been subdued. He recognized her voice, the American accent that had seemed so out of place in Syria, and the kiss she’d given him before she’d ridden into the darkness.

“I need to put the baby down for his nap,” Sadie said.

Fin’s nephew lay with his head on his mother’s shoulder, sucking his thumb, his eyes closed.

Sadie smiled at Aria. “If you’ll come with me, I’ll find you some clothes. No need to keep wearing the same torn things from your accident.”

“I don’t need anything. I’m sure I have clothes at my home.” Aria looked to Swede. “Could you print out a copy of my driver’s license? Surely, it has my home address on it.”

“Will do,” Swede said. “It shows an address in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.”

“Thank God,” she said. “I feel like I’m piecing my life together like a three-thousand-piece puzzle. One that never seems to end.”

“At least you have a starting point now,” Hank said.

“Aria,” Sadie said as if rolling the name around on her tongue. “Much more interesting than Jane.
