Chapter 13

Friends are fast and shallow in the dive-bar scene, but Lars is all smiles when I make my grand entrance from the 3:45 bus drop-off.

“I was gonna call my bondsman if I didn’t see you today,” he jokes.

Daisy nods and smiles warmly. “That’s right thoughtful of you. Luckily, I’m what you call a ‘small-time crook.’ Seems like that sheriff has bigger fish to fry.”

Lars chuckles and dumps two buckets of ice into the cooler. “I heard somebody caught a walleye that broke the record today. Things could get crazy tonight. But after that punch you threw, I guess you can handle yourself in a fight.” He smiles admiringly.

I give a clumsy curtsy. “That I can. That I can.”

Lars definitely knows his people. By ten o’clock the roadhouse is packed, and I’m pouring drinks and popping caps off beer bottles faster than I ever thought I could. Although, it’s hard to be a spy and a good waitress at the same time.

Despite my high hopes for the evening, the two men I had pegged as members of the train robbery gang never show. And with the decibels pumped out by the rambunctious crowd, it’s darn near impossible for me to eavesdrop on anything.

My phone buzzes in my back pocket and I duck into the supply room to check it.

“Meet me out back in five.”

It’s a text from Erick. Odd, since I don’t have anything to tell him. Looks like I’ll have to take up fake smoking to go along with my fake accent and my fake job. I deliver a tray of beers to the rowdy booth in the corner and endure the second slap on my backside of the evening.

Lars catches my eye and nods. He storms toward the table to have a word with the handsy patrons and I bum a cigarette off him as he passes. “Thanks. I’m just gonna step out back real quick.”

“No problem. I’ll take care of these guys.”

I snag an abandoned lighter off the bar and slip out the back door.

No sign of Erick. Looks like I’m going to have to actually light my prop. Just as the end catches and the cherry glows, my “contact” comes around the corner.

“You smoke now, Daisy? I feel like I don’t even know you.” Erick chuckles as he strides toward me.

I wasn’t expecting him to be in civilian clothes. I can assure you, I’m not disappointed.

He stops in the darkness just beyond the pool of light cast by the single caged bulb above the metal door. “It’s probably best if I keep out of sight.”

“Whatever you say, officer.” I fully embody the flirtatious character of Daisy and sway my hips as I approach my partially obscured rendezvous.

He shoves his hands in the pockets of his just-right jeans. “I thought I’d stop by and save you the trouble of eavesdropping all night. The gang made their second hit tonight.”

“Gosh darn it, if that ain’t as frustrating as hen poop on a pump handle.”

He chuckles. “How do you
