Cedric watched Ember intently from across the table as she wielded her fork-speared pancake dollop as a mop. She soaked up every drop of maple syrup from her plate before bringing the morsel to her mouth.

“You can ask for more syrup—”

“Shh.” Ember held up her finger. “I am not to be disturbed right now.”

Kali lapped at a bowl of strawberry milk, getting pink droplets on her whiskers and the counter top. “She’s serious about her ginger pancakes.”

“And Tomello’s makes them like nobody else,” Ember sighed. “We just never make it up this way any longer.”

“We will if your parents move here,” Cedric replied.

Ember started. “Say what? My parents are thinking about moving to Watermount county? They never said anything to me about that.”

Cedric flushed red, and he took a drink of his orange juice. “I think this is freshly squeezed. So good—”

“Cedric,” Ember growled. “What do you know that I don’t know?”

He sighed. “I guess I should have known it would come out sooner or later. Your parents have been talking to Ash, Ash talked to me…”

“But nobody said anything to me?”

“They all figured, what with the academy looming, and all, that, well…you had other things on your mind.”

“They didn’t want me to try and talk them out of it,” Ember fumed. “Why? What’s wrong with Cauchemar?”

“The cost of living has gone up, thanks to the brisk tourism trade.” Cedric sighed. “Their property taxes have become excoriating because of that, as well. They’re thinking of selling the house and moving here because it would be so much cheaper.”

Ember took a drink of tea and pursed her lips. “I can’t fault their logic, it’s just…jeez, Cedric. I’m a grown woman, and all I can think of is I’ll have to drive three hours to see them. What if they need my help? Dad’s not getting any younger. You know, he fell in the garage last year and no one found him for over an hour—”

“See?” Kali said. “This is why no one wanted to tell you, Ember. You’re catastrophizing again.”

“Catastrophizing?” Ember gaped.

“You do have a tendency toward that, Honey,” Cedric said. “Especially here, lately. With Bubb and all.”

Ember stiffened at the mention of B.L.C. Bubb. She thought of feathered wings and puzzle boxes and something she was supposed to realize.

“I’m not catastrophizing, I…I just believe in exploring all the possible ways that something might go wrong and planning accordingly.”

Kali gaped. “That’s the textbook definition of catastrophizing!”

Ember’s shoulders sagged in defeat. “alright, fine. I’ve been a bit of a pessimist lately.”

“It’s not a good look for you,” Kali said.

“Kali, that’s not nice.” Cedric turned to Ember and took her hands in his own. “I love you, and I’m worried about you. I can’t help but feel responsible for what’s happened.”

“Why?” Ember shook her head, staring down at their conjoined hands. “How is any of this your fault?”

“If I hadn’t lost my memories, you wouldn’t have had to make a deal with a devil in order to get them back.” Cedric pursed his lips.
